So how different is traditional archery from the modern archery? First is the bow. Here's an example of my bows:
A relatively simple bow, with no added gadgets which can be found on a modern bow. You can shoot while walking, running and the best part of it - while riding a horse.
Next comes the arrow. Of course its like any normal arrow that you can find, except for some technical specification.
So I started off with a 6 month Beginner Archery class with Syeikh Fuad who run the LEAP Programme. Its a once a week class of 1 hour conducted during weekends. I was really, really looking forward for the weekends during those days. Among the things that I learnt:
- Knocking
- Aim
- Full Draw
- Shoot
I continued training under him with a 6 month intermediate program following the completion of the beginner class. The training got harder this time with some intensive work out on the upper body for obvious reason. We started to shoot longer distance - from 25/35 meters to 70 and 100 meters.
So how do I do it ? With some improvisation, roughly its like this.
1. Knock your arrow and be in a prepared state, with your chest facing the target.
2. Draw your arrow and aim
3. Release the arrow
These are of course, simplified steps as not to touch too much into some details. If you are interested in taking up this art, do enrol into various programs which are available.
